MY INNOVATION FRAMEWORK

Cities are dynamic ecosystems shaped by people, places, institutions, and opportunity. As an MBA student at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, my work in the CityLab Catalyst course has focused on understanding how innovation, collaboration, and civic leadership can improve the livability of urban communities. My CityLab project explores how the Tampa Bay region can strengthen its social, environmental, and economic foundations to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to thrive.

Tampa Bay is a vibrant and rapidly growing metropolitan region. Its natural waterfront, diverse cultural heritage, and expanding economy make it an exciting place to live and work. However, like many growing cities, Tampa also faces complex urban challenges. Rising housing costs, homelessness, environmental pressures, and uneven access to opportunity highlight the need for innovative and collaborative solutions that bring together public institutions, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and citizens.

Through the CityLab program, I explored these issues using concepts such as urban ethnography and asset mapping—approaches that emphasize understanding communities through both observation and engagement. Rather than focusing solely on problems, asset mapping identifies the strengths that already exist within a community: its people, organizations, institutions, and natural resources. In Tampa, these assets include a strong nonprofit sector, engaged local universities, a passionate volunteer community, and a natural environment that defines the region’s identity.

My CityLab innovation framework centers on four interconnected pillars designed to leverage these local assets while addressing key challenges facing the city:

MAPPING OUR COMMUNITIES

SHELTERING THE UNSHELTERED

KEEP TAMPA BAY BEAUTIFUL

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SOCIAL GOOD

Together, these four pillars represent a collaborative approach to building a more livable city—one that connects data, community partnerships, environmental stewardship, and education. Rather than relying on a single solution, this framework emphasizes cross-sector collaboration and long-term investment in people and places.

Cities thrive when residents, institutions, and leaders work together toward a shared vision of the future. By leveraging Tampa Bay’s existing strengths and expanding opportunities for civic engagement, it is possible to create a community that is not only economically vibrant but also inclusive, resilient, and environmentally sustainable.

The future of Tampa Bay will be shaped by the choices its leaders and citizens make today. Through collaborative innovation and community-centered leadership, Tampa can continue to grow while ensuring that its prosperity benefits all who call the region home.
