Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful (Week 6)
By leveraging geospatial asset mapping and local charities who work hand in hand with the area’s homeless communities, our less-fortunate neighbors can be further empowered by contributing to a beautiful environment that we all benefit from. Not only do non-profits focus on litter cleanup that is often found around homeless encampments, my third foundational pillar for sustainable living leverages communal urban gardens and funding for green beautification projects in our city.
Tampa Bay’s natural environment – its river, bays, parks, and urban canopy – is a defining asset, yet many neighborhoods suffer from litter, illegal dumping, and lack of green space. Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful (KTBB) and similar groups have mobilized tens of thousands of volunteers to clean up the city: in FY25, KTBB engaged 24,026 volunteers to remove 372,486 pounds of litter and plant 1,600 trees and shrubs. These efforts not only beautify neighborhoods but also improve habitat, water quality, and community pride.
The Sustainable Living Project (an urban farm in Tampa) is another asset: by teaching gardening and sustainability, it connects residents to the land and provides fresh food. An integrated solution builds on these successes. For example, combining beautification drives with social support – such as involving formerly homeless or at-risk youth in community gardens or park cleanups – can achieve multiple goals. Environmental education programs (like KTBB’s storm-drain marking or beach cleanups) raise awareness while creating jobs or stipends for participants.
In practice, Tampa could expand programs that train and employ local residents in landscaping, invasive species removal, and urban farming. By stitching together volunteers, environmental nonprofits, and city parks departments, this pillar ensures that clean water, green spaces, and recreation are accessible in every neighborhood, contributing to the theme of a “Healthy Habitat” and engaged citizenship.
